Bioassessment Training Course (County Administration Building, 651 Pine Street, Room 101, Martinez CA 94553, from April 14, 2007 09:00 to April 14, 2007 17:00)
This is a full day workshop for new volunteers interested in participating in the 2007 bioassessment surveys. Join Jim Harrington (CA Dept. of Fish and Game) and Michelle Luebke (CCWF Watershed Monitoring Coordinator) for the day to understand why we monitor aquatic insects, learn the new bioassessment protocol and get out in the creek to practice using the protocol. (lunch provided, RSVP necessary)
Bioassessment Refresher Training (County Administration Building, 651 Pine Street, Room 101, Martinez CA 94553, from April 15, 2007 13:00 to April 15, 2007 17:00)
This is a refresher training for returning volunteers who are interested in participating in the 2007 bioassessment surveys. The protocols for the surveys have changed, so it is important that participants attend either the full day training on April 14th, or the half day refresher on April 15th. (RSVP Required)

GPS training with SPAWNERS (Boys and Girls Club, 4660 Appian Way, El Sobrante, CA, from August 22, 2007 19:00 to August 22, 2007 21:00)
The San Pablo Watershed Neighbors Education and Restoration Society (SPAWNERS) is hosting a GPS training event in El Sobrante from 7-9 pm. Contra Costa County Volunteer Creek Monitoring Program will provide a short training on the use of the county’s GPS units to map features of the creek such as bank composition and slope, vegetation and canopy, and natural and man made structures. The training will be followed by two survey field days.

August Re-leaf of the San Pablo creek with SPAWNERS (Grounds of the El Sobrante Library on 4191 Appian Way, EL Sobrante CA 94803, from September 08, 2007 09:30 to September 08, 2007 12:00)
Come out, enjoy the fresh air and join forces with SPAWNERS to remove invasive vegetation and plant natives along the creek banks of San Pablo Creek. SPAWNERS, is working to restore the natural habitat along the creek banks of the San Pablo Creek and inspire local residents to do the same in their private backyards. SPAWNERS current main re-vegetation project is in the grounds of the El Sobrante Public Library. This event is educational as well as actively improves the native habitat for local wildlife and protects the creek. We will be placing erosion controls and mulching the lower slopes of the restoration area. We will also have some ivy removal and weeding. Tools, gloves and snacks provided.

The population of social bees has been reported to be diminishing. Scientist speculate about possible causes. But what about our local native bees? Are those populations also diminishing due to environmental changes or habitat destruction? Come and listen to what Dr. Gordon Frankie has to say about ways to protect our native bees. Dr. Frankie holds a Ph.D. in Entomology and is an expert on native bees. He teaches at the University of California at Berkeley and is also the leader of the Urban Bees Research Project. Come out for this unique learning opportunity. No registration required, open to the general public. Snacks, coffee and tea will be offered.

Sign for the Detention Center is very obvious and on your R. Park at first pull out before detention center (upstream of center). The creek comes close to the road at this point. Let's meet there in the morning. *In the afternoon, we'll take Marsh Creek Road to Morgan Territory Road. Turn L on Morgan Territory and L onto Tumbleweed Ct (before Curry Canyon Creek and Road). Kirker Creek (KIR115) - *Kirker Creek Apartments – From CA-4 E, take the Railroad Avenue exit. Follow Railroad Avenue past Buchanan Road, when RR Ave turns into Kirker Pass Rd. The next left will be Pheasant Drive. Take a Left at the stoplight onto Pheasant Drive at the large Kirker Creek Apartments sign in front of complex. Go through “visitors” side of guard station, then Right at the stop sign all the way back to the right. Park near the set of dumpsters after you pass the creek. Park by curb or in spaces. We'll be in downtown Lafayette today. Let's meet at Leigh Creekside Park (WAL365), located at 4th St and Moraga BLVD., not ROAD, in Lafayette. Directions: Starting at center of downtown Lafayette, Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Moraga ROAD, go one long block south (toward Moraga) to stop light (Moraga Blvd.) turn left, proceed 4 blocks east to Park, between 3rd and 4th streets. There are plenty of places to buy lunch if you want. In the afternoon we will go to the Village Center (WAL375). Continue west on Mt. Diablo Blvd. and turn left onto Village Center. There is a parking lot or street parking right there at the intersection.

Marsh Creek - MSH045 and MSH061 - From Highway 4 East coming from Concord/Martinez take the Highway 4 bypass which now starts east of Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch. Stay in the left lanes of HW4 and you will go straight on to the bypass. Stay on the bypass past the Laurel Rd. and Lonetree exits. Turn left at Sand Creek Rd. Follow Sand Creek for about 1 mile past Fairview and take the next right at Minnesota. Turn left at Central Ave. Stay to the left at the first stop and then turn left into the Marsh Creek trail parking area after just after crossing the creek. We'll park and meet here. Afternoon (MSH061): From MSH045, take Central Ave. back to Minnestora Ave. and take a left. Follow Minnesota Ave. past Balfour Rd. to Claremont Dr. Turn left onto Crescent Dr. and park on the right side near the rust colored pedestrian bridge which crosses Marsh Creek at Creekside Park.

East and merge onto Sycamore Valley Rd West. Turn R at Camino Ramon. Turn L at El Capitan Dr. Turn R at Brookside Dr. Turn L at Zephyr Cir. Park at end of road and we'll meet here. In the afternoon we will go to WAL700 – Playa Court – Take 680 S to the Crow Canyon Rd. exit toward San Ramon. Turn R at Crow Canyon Rd. Turn R into 2821 Crow Canyon Road. Park around the back to where the parking lot abuts the creek. Polly and I will meet at Clayton Library (MTD060) at 10 and start with the BMI collection. Please join us when you can. From Martinez, take 680 S to Willow Pass Road exit (51) toward Taylor Blvd. Turn L at Willow Pass Rd., R at Fry Way, then L on Clayton Rd. From Clayton Rd, turn in at 6125 Clayton Rd, the Community Library. Drive northwest (down and to left) through parking lot, then over the second bridge (stone, not metal) on the right. Turn left and park by the side of the trail (George Cardinet Path), just in front of a cement retaining wall and past the carved wooden bunny. Walk up trail until you see the fences of the golf course on the right. Chances are high that we will still be there. When we finish, we will head over to the golf course (MTD020). From CA-4E, take Port Chicago Hwy exit north toward Diablo Creek Golf Course (4050 Port Chicago Hwy, Concord) on right. From Port Chicago Hwy, enter golf course opposite Industrial Way, park in lot and go to clubhouse to get a key for a golf cart.

From WAL520 to WAL500 - Take Danville Blvd back until it becomes South Main St. Turn R on Newell Ave. Turn R on Maria Lane. Park in the apartment complex parking lot at 1440 Maria Lane, being sure not to park in a numbered space. We'll meet in the parking lot and walk down by the chain-link fence to creek. There is a Whole Foods near here if you want to get food there for lunch. I probably will!

Cerrito and Baxter Creeks - (CER040 and BAX045) - Let's meet at the Gateway project on Baxter Creek in the morning and we'll do the Contra Costa College site in the afternoon. From I-80E, take San Pablo Ave. exit, and turn right onto San Pablo Ave. (From I-80W, take San Pablo/Barrett Ave. exit. Turn left onto Barrett, go under overpass, then turn right onto San Pablo Ave.) After 3 blocks, turn left onto MacDonald Ave. After 1 block, turn right onto Key Blvd. and continue to Conlon St. Gateway Park is on the right side of Key at the end of the Ohlone Greenway. In the afternoon, we will go over to Cerrito. Cerrito 040 El Cerrito Plaza, behind 9800 San Pablo Avenue closest cross street Carlson Blvd. Take I-80 to Central Avenue Exit. Head east six blocks, turn right onto Carlson Blvd. Continue down Carlson. Go through the stoplight at San Pablo Avenue and into El Cerrito Plaza. Turn right in front of the Longs and head south through the parking lot. There will be another stop sign at the corner sushi restaurant and the Creek will be in front of you to the south of the parking lot. Creek is runs on the south side boundary of the Plaza’s parking lot. There is a trail on the right hand bank. My understanding is the bottom of the reach is where it goes into the culvert just east of property 9800 San Pablo Avenue. The creek is here divided into two sections with street crossing and culvert.

Cerrito Creek (CER010 and CER020) - Cerrito 010 Pacific East Mall, 3254 Pierce St closest cross street Central Ave. Take I-80 to Central Avenue Exit. Head east one block, turn right onto Pierce Street. Creek is located on the south side of Pacific East Mall. Take the last driveway into the Mall and head to the back parking lot. Park in the southeast section of the parking lot. The top of the reach is the Richmond border which is parallel to the east boundary of the Mall’s parking lot. On the bank you will see a rock wall and in the creek you will see a man-made rock bottom. Start the top of the reach from the west side of that structure. The bottom of the reach is 150 meters west/downstream. There is a straight trail alongside the reach. We easily leapfrog the tapes along the trail to determine the point of entry. We marked the trail with construction tape as well as the vegetation at the creek side. Cerrito 020 upstream of Creekside Park (3448 Belmont Avenue) Santa Clara Avenue side closest cross street Lassen St. Take I-80 to Central Avenue Exit. Head east four blocks, turn right onto Santa Clara Avenue. Three blocks down street dead ends into Creekside park. Creek is located on the south side of trail heading east from Creekside Park to El Cerrito Plaza. If you are parked at Cerrito 010, walk east through the park about 400 ft.. The bottom of the reach is east side of the park just up from the confluence of Middle Creek.

Walk through fence ~50’. Look to the left to see the yellow tag on walnut tree on RB. This is the upstream end of the reach and photo point. In the afternoon, we'll go to KIR095 - KIR095 – Fox Creek Apartments – From CA-4 E, take the Railroad Avenue exit. From Railroad Avenue, turn Left onto E Leland Road. Turn Right on Harbor Street. The Fox Creek Apartments are at 3225 Harbor Street. Park wherever possible, then walk straight back and to right by 22F. Walk through the fence and you will see a footbridge and 3 large EBMUD water pipes crossing the creek. Turn to the right and walk (upstream) along fence to downed cottonwood tree. The yellow tag is on another cottonwood on LB. We had a trash assessment here. *Note: Directions are from Martinez. Please modify accordingly.

Marsh Creek - MSH052 and MSH061 - From Highway 4 East coming from Concord/Martinez take the Highway 4 bypass which now starts east of Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch. Stay in the left lanes of HW4 and you will go straight on to the bypass. Continue on the Bypass past Lonetree Way and Sand Creek Rd. to Balfour Rd. Turn left on Balfour Continue on Balfour past Minnesota and take the next left at Sweetgrass. Follow Sweetgrass until it veers to the left at Darby Dr. Park near the corner of Sweetgrass and Darby. Afternoon (MSH061): From MSH052, take Sweetgrass to Balfour Rd. and take a right. Turn left on Claremont Dr. and another left onto Crescent Dr. and park on the right side near the rust colored pedestrian bridge which crosses Marsh Creek at Creekside Park.

ALH110 - Follow Alhambra Ave from Hwy 4 north toward downtown. About 1/2 mile on Alhambra Ave, take a right onto J Street and it immediately leads into a set of apartments along Alhambra Creek. Park in the back of the apartments on the north side. Our access to the site is through a gated fence.

WAL410 - From Hwy 24 in Lafayette take Pleasant Hill Road exit and go right (west) on Mt. Diablo Blvd. After about 1 mile take a left onto Moraga Road. Go about 1/2 miloe and turn left onto Saint Mary's Road. Follow about 2 2/3 miles to a community center and day care on the left at the north end of Lafayette Community Park. Park in the parking lot to the rear of the community center.

Morning: SPA190 - EBMUD Orinda Treatment Plant – Take 680 S to 24 W to Orinda exit (9). Merge onto Camino Pablo. Turn right onto Manzanita Drive and into the EBMUD station. Meet at the gate, since they will need to buzz you in and you need to sign in and out as a guest in the facility. Afternoon: SLE208 - From CA-24 W, take the Acalanes Rd exit toward Upper Happy Valley Rd. Take a sharp right at Acalanes Rd. and then turn right at Glorietta Blvd. Turn left at Moraga Way into the Miramonte High School parking lot, located at 750 Moraga Way. Park and meet here.

CER040 - El Cerrito Plaza at culvert - Take I-80 to the Central Avenue exit. Follow Central to the stoplight with Carlson. Turn right onto Carlson Blvd. and continue through the stoplight at San Pablo Avenue and into El Cerrito Plaza. Turn right in front of the Longs and head south through the parking lot. There will be another stop sign at the sushi restaurant on the corner. The creek will be in front of you to the south of the parking lot by the Wells Fargo. Park anywhere in the parking lot.

SPA133 - Coming from Martinez, take I-80 W to exit 22 for Pinole Valley Road. Turn left at Pinole Valley Road and then right at Castro Ranch Road. Follow Castro Ranch Road to the intersection with Conestoga Way and turn around there. Park on the north side of the road by the first guardrail and pull-out. Meet at the pull-out. There is a telephone poll there (and should be yellow flagging if it hasn't been removed) marking the path back to the waterfall. *This site has lots of poison oak - Please bring a change of clothes and Technu - If you are very sensitive, you might want to consider not surveying this site*

Turn left on Moraga Blvd. Park, between 3rd and 4th streets. Meet there in the morning. In the afternoon, WAL365 – Village Center – Take 680 S to 24 W to the exit toward Mt. Diablo Blvd. Turn right on Mt. Diablo Blvd. and follow that out to Village Center (toward the reservoir). Turn left on Village Center and park on the street. It may be hot, so please bring plenty of water. I've planned the shadier site for the afternoon.

MTD100 - Take 680 S to Willow Pass Road exit (51) toward Taylor Blvd. Turn L at Willow Pass Rd., R at Fry Way, then L on Clayton Rd. From Clayton Rd driving southeast, turn off onto Main St. ("the historic district"), then bear right again onto Oak St. Take Oak St. up to Oak Ct., turn right to stay on Oak St., past Douglas Ct. and continue to bridge with "No Trespassing" sign. Meet at the bridge over the creek.

SPA110 – Wilkie Creek – From Martinez, take I-80 to the Appian Way exit. Curve to the right to stay on Appian, then turn left onto San Pablo Dam Road. From Berkeley, take I-80 to the San Pablo Dam Road exit. Take SPD Rd to May Road. Take a left on May Road to Santa Rita Rd. Take a right onto Santa Rita (two blocks east of May Rd.). Park along road on south side of De Anza High School. Access is the culvert at Santa Rita Road with stone bridge.

Morning: MSH130 – County Detention Center – Take Marsh Creek Road east through Clayton. Follow Marsh Creek Road past Morgan Territory Road a few miles. Sign for the Detention Center very obvious. If coming from the east, park at first pull out before detention center (upstream of center). The creek comes close to the road at this point. Park off to the side and we'll meet here. Afternoon: MSH140 - MSH140 – Take Marsh Creek Road to Morgan Territory Road. 210 Tumbleweed Ct. off Morgan Territory Rd. below Curry Canyon Creek (and Road). Access point is through the side and back yard of Brad Howell at 210 Tumbleweed Court in Clayton.

Kirker Creek (KIR115) - *Kirker Creek Apartments – From CA-4 E, take the Railroad Avenue exit. Follow Railroad Avenue past Buchanan Road, when RR Ave turns into Kirker Pass Rd. The next left will be Pheasant Drive. Take a Left at the stoplight onto Pheasant Drive at the large Kirker Creek Apartments sign in front of complex. Go through “visitors” side of guard station, then Right at the stop sign all the way back to the right. Park near the set of dumpsters after you pass the creek. Park by curb or in spaces. We'll meet either there or at the entrance if you had trouble having them let you in. *Note* All directions are from the County Building in Martinez.

Access on south side of El Portal at large concrete flat with railing by large willow tree adjacent to sidewalk above grate. Walk downstream to ~30’ upstream of metal retaining wall structure on RB.

Morning: WAL090 - West Fork Grayson Creek - From I-680 S, take exit 49 to merge onto Gregory Ln. Continue onto Grayson Rd, then turn left onto Mohawk Drive off Grayson Road. Mohawk will be immediately after crossing Taylor Blvd and before the hill going up to the right, but the sign is on the left side of Mohawk and is pretty hidden. There is a "No Outlet" sign on the right side of Mohawk that is much more visible. We'll park near that intersection and meet there. Afternoon: WAL050 - Grayson Creek - From WAL090, take Mohawk Drive back to Grayson Road. Turn right at Grayson Rd., then take the 2nd left onto Taylor Blvd. Turn left at Ruth Dr. Follow Ruth Dr. to the intersection with Viking Drive and park on Ruth. We'll meet there. If it's hot on Saturday, please remember a hat and plenty of water. Our afternoon site has no shade (but it'll go super fast!).
